Food Guidelines for
Braces
The braces are placed on your teeth with
an adhesive that is strong but not too strong so we can
remove them at the end of your treatment. Therefore, braces can be broken off if you eat the wrong foods. You
cannot eat any hard, sticky, or chewy foods such as:
HARD: Popcorn,
ice, hard pretzels, chips, nuts, peanut
brittle, bagels, pizza crust, hard candy especially jaw
breakers!
STICKY: Gum
(any kind), taffy, caramel, gummy bears, candy bars like Snickers
and Butter Fingers, fruit roll ups, Starburst, Swedish
Fish, Tootsie Rolls, etc.
CHEWY: Granola
bars, beef jerky, Slim Jims, Power Bars, etc.
HINTS:
-
You can eat corn, but remember to cut
it off the cob first.
-
Fruits and veggies: always cut into
bite size pieces and chew on your back teeth. (such
as apples, carrots, broccoli and pears)
-
Always cut your meats from the bone
prior to eating. Never bite into the bone such as
chicken or ribs.
-
Try to avoid biting into foods as
much as possible and use your fork and knife to cut
up your food into smaller pieces.
-
Foods high in sugar can cause
cavities, calculus build up, and stains on your
teeth.
-
Do not pick at your braces, chew on
pens or pencils – this can also break of braces.
-
No biting your nails!! This can
easily break off brackets.
Remember that breaking off brackets,
bending your wires, etc. can prolong your treatment so
be kind to your braces and eat properly to assure your
treatment moves along in a timely manner.
Thanks for your cooperation and good luck
with your braces.
Please call the office as soon as
possible if anything becomes loose or broken.
